of the Relief <strong>and</strong> <strong>Rescue</strong> Committee. On 2.9.1945 Lea arrived in Eretz<br />

Israel (Palestine). She was a member of the hahshara garin in Kibbutz<br />

Negba <strong>and</strong>, from 1946 until 1960, a member of Kibbutz Yehiam. She is<br />

married to Haim Tzur <strong>and</strong> resides in Givatayim.<br />

Member of “Mizrahi”<br />

Meir was the son of the chief orthodox rabbi. He was the founder of the<br />

“Hahashmona’im” association <strong>and</strong> a member, secretary <strong>and</strong> chairman of<br />

“Maccabea”. In addition Meir was the leader of “Hakoah”. He had a<br />

doctorate in law <strong>and</strong> was a public figure <strong>and</strong> publicist. He filled various<br />

positions in the Hungarian Zionist Association. After the Germans<br />

invaded Hungary on 19.3.1944, Meir took part in the rescue of Jews. He<br />

stayed at the “Glass House” <strong>and</strong> worked in the department that dealt with<br />

the production of Protection Documents. After the liberation in 1945 Meir<br />

held positions in the World Zionist Organization <strong>and</strong> in the Joint. He was<br />

also a legal consultant <strong>for</strong> the Israeli Legacy in Budapest. He made aliya<br />

in 1950. From 1957 to 1959 he served as the chairman of the “Hungarian<br />

Immigrants’ Association” in Israel.<br />

Vajda Simha<br />

Simha was the maintenance manager of the Jewish Hospital in Budapest<br />

on 3, Szabolcs Street. After Austria was annexed by Germany, many<br />

Jews who did not have Austrian citizenship were deported. Some of them<br />

were put on a ship that sailed on the Danube River in the direction of the<br />

international border of three countries. The refugees did not receive any<br />

food or water. 300 refugees came off the ship <strong>and</strong> found refuge in a<br />

hospital until the end of the war.<br />

After the Germans invaded Slovakia many refugees were taken to the<br />

hospital out of concern <strong>for</strong> their welfare. Simha Vajda was in charge of<br />

their employment <strong>and</strong> financial maintenance. He helped the refugees in<br />

all ways to enable them to survive the wartime years.<br />

Simha Vajda made aliya. He worked <strong>for</strong> Solel Boneh. Later he lived in a<br />

home <strong>for</strong> the elderly in Natanya.<br />
