summer of 1944, with a group of friends, she tried to cross the border into<br />

Romania within the framework of the tiyul. They were all caught. All her<br />

friends’ ef<strong>for</strong>ts to release them failed. Yoheved was deported to<br />

Auschwitz where she perished.<br />

Baron Miriam<br />

Born in Kolozsvár (Cluj) on 6.6.1924<br />

Member of “Dror Habonim”<br />

Miriam arrived in Budapest in 1941. She stayed at an illegal hahshara of<br />

“Habonim” (which later became “Dror Habonim”). She smuggled<br />

refugees, members of the youth movements <strong>and</strong> other Jews to Romania<br />

within the framework of the tiyul. Miriam acted under various false names.<br />

She was arrested but released. At the end of 1944 she arrived in Eretz<br />

Israel (Palestine). Miriam was one of the first members of Kibbutz “Ein<br />

Zetim”.<br />

Dr. Bar-Tzvi Moshe<br />

Schweiger Miklós<br />

Born in Zenta (Senta) on 29.11.1905<br />

Died on 13.8.1963 in Israel<br />

Member of “Ihud Mapa’i”<br />

Moshe was the son of the Orthodox Rabbi in his town. He studied law in<br />

Zagreb <strong>and</strong> was head of the Jewish Academics Union, “Judea”. After<br />

graduating he opened a law firm. He was known as a brilliant orator in<br />

Hungarian, German <strong>and</strong> Serbo-Croatian.<br />

After the Vojvodina area was occupied by the Hungarians in April 1941,<br />

Moshe fled to Budapest <strong>and</strong> made contact with Joel Br<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> his circle.<br />

He was appointed by the representatives of the Jewish Yishuv who<br />

operated in Istanbul as head of the “Committee <strong>for</strong> Defense” of the<br />

Zionist youth movements in Budapest. However, the representatives of<br />

the youth movements chose Moshe Rosenberg over him.<br />

After the German invasion of Hungary on 19.3.1944, Moshe was arrested<br />

by the German security <strong>for</strong>ces who claimed he was Stalin’s brother-in-<br />

<strong>Brothers</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Resistance</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Rescue</strong> 50
