150 2009 SEASON
GAME 1 Seattle Seahawks 28, St. Louis Rams 0
Sunday, September 13, 2009 — Qwest Field
The Seahawks overcame three first-quarter turnovers to rally for a 28-0 shutout over their division rivals
the St. Louis Rams. The Rams fumbled away the opening kickoff when Lance Laury stripped the ball from
Rams returner Donnie Avery and Will Herring recovered at the St. Louis 19-yard line. However, three plays
later Matt Hasselbeck’s shot at the endzone was tipped and fell into the hands of James Butler. Later in the
quarter, Seattle turned the ball over on consecutive possessions - one fumble and another interception,
but on both occasions Seattle’s defense stopped the Rams forcing a punt and a Josh Brown field goal
attempt that sailed wide right. Seattle scored touchdowns on four of their next five possessions, including
the final two of the first half. Hasselbeck connected with John Carlson on a 1-yard TD pass with 5:45
remaining. Seattle was forced into a 49-yard field goal attempt on their next offensive series with :59
remaining before half. The Olindo Mare attempt was blocked and returned 51 yards for a TD; however, a
booth review of the play showed 12 Rams’ players on the field and the ensuing 5-yard penalty resulted in
a Seahawks first down. Three plays later Hasselbeck tossed a strike to Nate Burleson from 12 yards out for
a 14-0 halftime lead. After punting on the opening possession of the second half, Hasselbeck connected
with Carlson for a 33-yard TD. After forcing the Rams to a three-and-out, Julius Jones flashed through the
middle on the first play from scrimmage for a 62-yard TD run, second longest of his career. The Rams
threatened to score late in the fourth quarter, but facing a fourth-and-7 Marc Bulger’s pass fell incomplete
and Seattle’s defense preserved the fourth opening day shutout in team history.
