Hired on February 4, 2010, Luke Butkus
enters his first season in Seattle after spending
three years as the Chicago Bears offensive
assistant/assistant offensive line coach.
Signed by the Bears as an undrafted free
agent out of the University of Illinois in 2002,
Butkus returned to Chicago after beginning his
coaching career as a graduate assistant coach
with the University of Oregon from 2005-06.
A center during his playing days, Butkus
moved into coaching at Oregon after finishing
his professional football career in 2004 following
training camp with the Houston Texans.
Prior to that he played two seasons in NFL
Europe, for the Rhein Fire in 2003 and the
Cologne Centurions in 2004. Butkus spent
most of the 2002 season on the San Diego
Chargers practice squad and went to training
camp with the team in 2003.
Butkus was a four-year letterwinner at the
University of Illinois from 1998-2001. He was
named a third-team All-American his senior
year while also garnering All-Big Ten honors as
a team captain.
Named to his current position February 4,
2010, Canales enters the NFL after one season
as USC’s offensive administrative assistant in
2009.
Canales’ primary responsibilities include
video study of opponents, self-scouting, playbook
production, and assisting offensive coordinator
Jeremy Bates.
Prior to USC, he coached quarterbacks at El
Camino College from 2006-08.
A graduate of Azusa Pacific, where he
played receiver for four years, he earned his

He is a graduate of Bloom Township High
School in suburban Chicago and the nephew
of legendary Bears linebacker Dick Butkus. He
served as an instructor at the University of
Illinois Summer Football Camps from 2002-04
and has done so at the Revie Sorey & Jerry
Azumah All-Pro Football Camps since 1995.
Butkus, born on June 26, 1979, and his
wife, Nici, have one son, Benjamin.
