GAME 3 Chicago Bears 25, Seattle Seahawks 19
Sunday, September 27, 2009 — Qwest Field
The Seahawks, with seven starters inactive due to injury, fought valiantly but came up just short against
the Chicago Bears in front of a packed Qwest Field. After a missed Robbie Gould 53-yard field goal on the
game’s opening drive, Seattle used the good field position and scored right away when Julius Jones took
a Seneca Wallace screen pass and broke through tackles and ran 39 yards for a touchdown. On the Bears’
ensuing drive, David Hawthorne, making his first-career start, thwarted a Bears scoring opportunity by
intercepting a Jay Cutler pass on the Seattle 12-yard line. The Seahawks capitalized with the first of four
Olindo Mare field goals to take a 10-0 lead. After a Bears three-and-out, the Seahawks tacked on three
more points for a 13-0 lead early in the second quarter. The Bears then scored on a 1-yard Cutler-to-Greg
Olsen pass to pull within 13-7. The score came just after a field-ruled fumble at the 1-yard line was challenged
and overturned keeping possession with the Bears. Seattle moved into field goal position in the
final seconds but Mare’s 43-yard attempt was wide left. The Bears capitalized on two turnovers deep in
Seattle territory and another Mare missed field goal and scored 10 points in the third quarter to take a 17-
13 lead. Mare connected on field goals of 39 and 46 yards in the fourth quarter to put Seattle back in front
with 5:12 remaining. The Bears used six plays capped by a Devin Hester 36-yard touchdown reception to
take a 25-19 lead after a successful two-point conversion. Seattle drove the ball to the Bears 29, but came
up short on a fourth down attempt turning the ball over in the final minute. For the game, Hawthorne
totaled 16 tackles, third-most in team history and most by a Seahawks player since 2002.
