The stadium, built on 37 acre of land, was originally<br />
constructed as an amphitheatre and renovated in 1951 for<br />
the first Asian <strong>Games</strong> and then again for the ninth Asian<br />
<strong>Games</strong> in 1982. For Delhi 2010, the heritage character of<br />
the National Stadium was retained while converting it into<br />
an international level stadium. The stadium was dedicated to<br />
the memory of Indian hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand in<br />
2002.<br />
The outdoor stadium has two competition pitches of<br />
international standards and one warm-up/training pitch, all<br />
provided with artificial turf. In preparation for Delhi 2010,<br />
the hockey pitches were equipped with floodlights and an<br />
electronic and video-matrix scoreboard.<br />
For entry and exit, it has four ramps for the open gallery,<br />
two ramps for VIP gallery, staircases and lifts.<br />
