Table 2: Issues identified within the current project and the suitability of constructivist grounded
theory (Charmaz, 2000, 2006, 2008, 2009)
Issues for current project:
Using literature to identify topics
regarding internet use by mainstream
and disabled youth populations
Each participant has unique
characteristics regarding physical access
challenges and
language/literacy/cognitive ability
Extremely limited data exists regarding
the self-reported experiences of how
young people who use AAC are
utilising the internet and online social
media
Suitability of constructivist grounded
theory (Charmaz, 2000, 2006, 2008,
2009)
Theoretical sensitivity - A traditional
grounded theory approach contends a
literature review might prejudice a
researcher (Skeat & Perry, 2008).
Charmaz’s constructivist approach
asserts a focused literature review often
“strengthens your argument ... without
letting it stifle your creativity”
(2006:166).
Charmaz (2000) states a constructivist
approach to grounded theory entails
coding a participant’s language with an
active intent to “keep life in the
foreground”(p. 526)
A constructivist grounded theory
approach is useful when little is known
as it can assist researchers to learn how
“participants make sense of their
experiences [and] begin to make analytic
sense of their meanings and actions”
(Charmaz, 2006:11)
