H. Personal Property<br />

CDF and CTF - kept at the DC Jail. Property can be picked up at DC Jail (Visitors<br />

Entrance) Monday – Friday, noon to 7pm. Detained inmates must sign a form<br />

appointing a designated person to pick up property. The designated person must call<br />

(202) 673-8019 at least 24 hours in advance to schedule an appointment for pick-up.<br />

The designated person must provide a valid government picture ID to receive the<br />

property. Released inmates do not need to make advance appointments. Property is<br />

retained for 15 days after the inmate’s release. Property belonging to halfway house<br />

residents who leave the house involuntarily will be kept at the respective halfway<br />

house (up to 7 days) after the resident leaves the facility. Generally, staff attempt to<br />

contact the resident’s next-of-kin to transfer the property. Residents who depart the<br />

facility voluntary are expected to take all belongings with them.<br />

BOP - is assigned authority for DC Code Offenders sentenced to prison terms longer<br />

than one year. BOP places DC prisoners in various prisons located around the<br />

country. (See www.bop.gov/locations for a list of BOP managed facilities and<br />

locations.) BOP attempts to place each prisoner in the “least restrictive facility for<br />

which s/he qualifies” within 500 miles of the residence where the individual is<br />

expected to be released. BOP also contracts with private security companies to detain<br />

DC Code Offenders. The Rivers Correctional Institution (privately owned by GEO<br />

Group, Inc), in Winton, North Carolina is a commonly used private prison for DC<br />

Code Offenders under contract with BOP (see Transportation, this Chapter).<br />

Mothers and Infants Nurturing Together (MINT) (BOP Program) www.bop.gov<br />

Women who give birth while in the custody of BOP must relinquish custody of the<br />

newborn child to a designated person or social services agency within 48 hours after<br />

the birth. Newborn children are not permitted to return to the institution with their<br />

mother.<br />

MINT is a BOP program for eligible low-risk women who are pregnant at the time<br />

of commitment. Inmates are assigned to a designated community residential<br />

program where they can remain with their newborn for up to three months before<br />

returning to the institution to complete their sentence. Eligibility: Inmate must be<br />

eligible for furlough, have a sentence of less than five years, inmate or guardian<br />

must assume financial responsibility for the child’s medical care while in the MINT<br />

program.<br />
