VI. SHELTERS, TRANSITIONAL, PERMANENT<br />
HOUSING<br />
Shelters, Transitional and Permanent Housing<br />
Shelter (Individual) Overnight accommodations for unattached individuals.<br />
Gender segregated facilities. Provides bed, meals, some<br />
offer medical care, laundry, showers, social service<br />
referrals. Length of stay 12 hours (7pm to 7am) except<br />
during periods of hypothermia or hyperthermia. Space<br />
available 1 st come, 1 st served.<br />
Shelter (Family) Overnight accommodations for families. Provides bed,<br />
meals, laundry, and telephone services. Some provide social<br />
service referrals, child care, job training resources.<br />
Transitional (Individual) Temporary housing for up to 24 months while receiving<br />
case management services with the goal of securing<br />
permanent housing, some provide job training, education,<br />
counseling, life skills training.<br />
Transitional (Family) Temporary housing for up to 24 months. Some provide<br />
training for employment, education, referral services.<br />
Market Rate Rent or purchase rate set at the fair value of the property.<br />
Single Room Occupancy Houses one or two people in individual rooms. May include<br />
(SRO) kitchens, bathrooms.<br />
Permanent Supportive Provides homeless and disabled individuals and families<br />
Housing affordable housing that is linked to supportive services for<br />
those unable to live independently.<br />
Public Housing Government-provided housing at low rent for families,<br />
individuals.<br />
Affordable Housing Housing for people on lower income in which rent or<br />
mortgage does not exceed a specific percent.<br />

Hotline maintains hourly tally of DC available beds for homeless adult & families.<br />
The Hotline staff attempts to place residents according to needs. UPO also operates<br />
hypothermia mobile vans for individuals and families in immediate need of shelter.<br />

Intake for DC homeless families in need of shelter. Required: picture ID, SS card,<br />
birth certificate (for each family member needing shelter together), statement of<br />
income (SSI, TANF eligibility, W-2 form, and pay stub), writ of eviction or statement<br />
of homelessness if living with family or friend. Children need NOT be present at<br />
initial interview. Intake hours Mon-Thurs 8:30am to 4:00pm. Washington Legal<br />
Clinic for the Homeless provides on-site consultations on Wednesdays 12:30pm.<br />
