The SMS-B system architecture (Source: Own preparation)
system is supplemented by additional modules signed in Fig.
by dotted line. In the third phase the most important modules
of the system are decentralized between separated machines
due to current needs and financial possibilities. There are
metadata, Extraction Transformation Loading (ETL), OLAP
analysis and report distribution servers.
Data loaded into real BI systems comes from many different
external sources, primarily from transactional systems. According
to procedural, legal, but first technical, circumstances
there are no possibilities of using real data by SMS-B system.
Therefore data for the purposes of the system is being generated
randomly according to scripts and structures designed
on the basis of real data structures.
The range of data includes such areas as: attributes of customers
in the form of financial reports, involvement to different
products, account balances, security details, debt collections
and the sets of market data. Generated data are loaded to data
warehouse, which apart from central data base is equipped
with data compatibility control, data supplement, data aggregation
and limited support of data management mechanisms.
Data from data warehouse are processed by ETL server
according to scenarios, which enables to gain data extracts
necessary for analytical processes. Generated data extracts
are saved and stored in common layer divided to repositories
used by different system modules. Its structures are optimized
for specific analysis categories.
A management of ETL processes, data extracts and data
circulation in SMS-B system are supported and optimized by
metadata server, which is introduced to system structure in
the second phase of realization.
The analytical server consists of applications which implements
selected methods of statistical data analysis, data
mining, multidimensional data analysis and forecasting models.
Standard analytical methods are implemented with using
the analytical software to build the basic functionality of analytical
server. Advanced analytical methods dedicated to concrete
analytical models are implemented during introduction of
SMS-B areas of functionality and new analytical methodologies
introduced in real financial institutions. In the third phase
of system implementation part of analytical server responsible
for multidimensional analysis and results presentation is
moved to the separate, dedicated OLAP server.
The Report Distribution Server is dedicated for management
of analysis results in the form of Enterprise Information
Portal (EIP), which enables a hierarchical distribution of reports
for different system user groups. In the first phase the
Enterprise Integration Platform (EIIP) is implemented, which is
dedicated to integration of data destined to present as a enduser
information. In the second phase main EIP module is introduced
and integrated with additional parts of the SMS-B
system: administration and end-user stations. In the third
phase EIP/EIIP module is upgraded and supplemented by
new techniques of business report presentations, for example
management dashboards. The conception of introduction
of EIP/EIIP platform as a part of SMS-B system is described
in other paper [4].
Because the SMS-B system simulates information environment
of commercial bank, system introduction process
was preceded by analysis of software and solutions market
dedicated to information systems in polish banks. In analysis
in wide range case studies of Gartner Group prepared with
using of Magic Quadrants methodology were used [3,7,9].
System objectives
Main objective of SMS-B system is a simulation of information
environment in commercial bank by reconstruction of its
components and preparation of data structures generated on
the base of real structures. Integrated information environment
is used to provide didactic pathways and single subjects
dedicated to areas of interesting specific for different categories
of real integrated information systems users.
The first category are Information and Communication
Technologies (ICT) service users, which consists of:
• ICT Administrators, which administrate and manage of user
accounts hierarchy, software and report distribution;
• Data Modelers, which manage of business views, create
physically data schemes, program in programming languages,
e.g. SQL;
• Report Administrators, which project of report schemes,
create reports, control and monitor of queries;
• Application Developers, which create Web and system applications.
The second category are Business Users, which consists of:
• Business Analysts, which typically objectives are: advanced
worksheet using, e.g. Excel, ad-hoc queries, OLAP
analysis, report publication, business processes projecting;
• Power Users, which typically objectives are: some programming
objectives, advanced worksheets using, ad-hoc
queries, specialized reports preparation, data modeling
and analysis, management of business activity areas.
The third category are Information Consumers, which consists
of:
• C-Level Executives, which project business strategies,
control and monitor business processes;
• Middle Management, which interpret of business indicators
and parameters;
• Operational Consumers, which typically objectives are connected
with sales, marketing, service, financial activity,
technical support.
Apart from subjects dedicated to practically using of SMS-
B system for concrete real user group needs, a different parts
of system can be effectively used to providing of subjects,
