The Board of Directors<br />

Brief details of each Director <strong>and</strong> their record of<br />

attendance at Board meetings are shown below.<br />

James Brent, Chairman<br />

James was an investment banker for<br />

25 years <strong>and</strong> established Akkeron<br />

Group LLP which has key business<br />

activities in hotels, urban generation<br />

<strong>and</strong> large scale agriculture. He also<br />

owns a controlling stake in the <strong>Devon</strong>based<br />

surf wear br<strong>and</strong> Saltrock. He<br />

has combined his commercial ventures<br />

with a desire to contribute in a range<br />

of public sector settings as well, for<br />

example as Chairman of Plymouth City<br />

Development Company. More recently<br />

he has invested in Plymouth Argyle<br />

Football Club <strong>and</strong> is the new club<br />

chairman.<br />

Brian Aird, Vice-Chairman<br />

Brian joined the Trust in April 2008.<br />

He has considerable previous NHS<br />

experience as a Chief Executive of<br />

a NHS Trust <strong>and</strong> a Health Authority.<br />

He was previously a Non-Executive<br />

Director of Trent Strategic Health<br />

Authority, <strong>and</strong> more recently has<br />

run his own company offering<br />

organisational development <strong>and</strong><br />

executive coaching services. He is<br />

also a trustee of United Response,<br />

a national charity providing services<br />

to people with learning difficulties<br />

<strong>and</strong> mental health needs. Appointed<br />

Vice-Chairman in May 2010, Brian<br />

also chairs the Trust’s Organ Donation<br />

Committee <strong>and</strong> the Engagement <strong>and</strong><br />

Experience Committee.<br />

Peter Knott, Non-Executive Director<br />

Peter joined our Board in July <strong>2012</strong>. He<br />

is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered<br />

Accountants in Engl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> Wales <strong>and</strong><br />

a graduate of the University of Reading.<br />

His 27 years of experience in finance<br />

is extensive covering investment,<br />

commercial <strong>and</strong> consumer banking,<br />

securities <strong>and</strong> fund management. Most<br />

recently he was the Group Head of<br />

Operational Risk for St<strong>and</strong>ard Chartered<br />

Bank. His career has involved working<br />

in London, Luxembourg, Hong Kong,<br />

Singapore, Tokyo <strong>and</strong> New York.<br />

His charity sector interests include<br />

Sightsavers, Vision Fund International<br />

<strong>and</strong> Seeing is Believing.<br />

David Robertson, Non-Executive<br />

Director<br />

David joined the Trust in October<br />

2010 <strong>and</strong> is a Fellow of the Institute<br />

of Chartered Accountants in<br />

Engl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> Wales <strong>and</strong> a graduate<br />

in Business Studies. He was Finance<br />

Director of Viridor Limited, the waste<br />

management subsidiary of <strong>Exeter</strong><br />

based Pennon Group plc, until March<br />

2011. He was with the Pennon Group<br />

for 20 years, prior to which he was<br />

with KPMG for 14 years. He is also<br />

a trustee of South West Lakes Trust.<br />

David is Chair of the Audit Committee.<br />

Michele Romaine, Non-Executive<br />

Director<br />

Michele joined the RD&E Board in<br />

September <strong>2012</strong>. She has held a<br />

number of senior roles in public sector<br />

organisations, including the BBC as its<br />

Director of Production. Ten years ago<br />

Michele helped steer the course for the<br />

BBC in a time of significant change,<br />

setting the vision for the technology,<br />

people <strong>and</strong> the process change<br />

necessary to modernise the BBC’s<br />

production capabilities. Michele has<br />

more recently served for three years as<br />

a Non-Executive Director on the Board<br />

of Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust.<br />

She continues to travel internationally<br />

through her consultancy business.<br />

Andrew Willis, Non-Executive Director<br />

Andy joined the Board in February<br />

2011. Previous Board experience<br />

includes service on two NHS acute<br />

provider Boards <strong>and</strong> in the housing<br />

sector. A corporate lawyer by<br />

profession, he has worked for City <strong>and</strong><br />

regional law firms <strong>and</strong> now specialises<br />

in legal training. He is also a Leadership<br />

Associate of the King's Fund, focusing<br />

on corporate governance <strong>and</strong> NHS<br />

Board/Director development. Andy is<br />

Chair of the Governance Committee.<br />

David Wright, Non-Executive Director,<br />

Senior Independent Director<br />

David joined the Trust in April 2008<br />

<strong>and</strong> is now retired but spent the<br />

majority of his career with Save the<br />

Children UK, where he was a Country<br />

Programme Director for various areas<br />

both in the UK <strong>and</strong> abroad. He was<br />

also Chairman of Swindon PCT <strong>and</strong> a<br />

Non-Executive Director with Wiltshire<br />

NHS Community Trust. David became<br />

the Senior Independent Director in<br />

February 2011.
