£34,000 grant for national
research project
RD&E Orthodontic Senior Registrar
Ansa Akram secured the highest grant
available from the British Orthodontic
Society to carry out research into
the quality of life of youngsters born
without adult teeth (hypodontia).
This study follows on from the research
she did during her Doctorate in
Orthodontics which won the 2011
British Orthodontic Society’s national
award for postgraduate research.
Hypodontia is a condition affecting
5-8 % of the population where
babies are born without some of
their permanent or adult teeth which
normally replace their baby teeth.
This becomes apparent during their
early teenage years. A predominantly
genetic condition, it can have
a significant impact on children
ranging from difficulty in eating and
speaking to being bullied at school.
80% of patients will present to their
orthodontist at around 11 years of age,
a time of life when having a full set of
teeth is so important.
This three-year research project aims
to establish how we can provide
the best possible quality of care for
our patients using all the treatments
available across orthodontics and other
dental specialities. The RD&E is leading
the project with six other hospitals
around the UK participating including
Musgrove Park Taunton.
Exeter Surgical Health Services
Research Unit officially opened
The President of the Royal College
of Surgeons, Professor Norman
Williams, officially opened the Exeter
Surgical Health Services Research Unit
(HeSRU) in September.
This specialist resource brings together
a wealth of clinical knowledge and
research to improve the care and
experience of surgical patients.
The unit facility has a video link from a
seminar room to operating theatres for
teaching and a clinical consultation room.
It supports work for the National Institute
for Health research and strengthens
established links with partners, including
the University of Exeter.
Consultant colorectal surgeon Professor
Williams was hosted by RD&E
consultant surgeons and during his visit
he heard first-hand about the latest
surgical research being performed in
the unit, including work on the early
detection of surgical complications,
novel developments in surgical
training as well as improvements in
the treatment of skin cancer.
Gold standard care achieved
Three hospital wards have achieved
the highest standard award in
the Nursing Quality Assessment Tool
(NQAT) each ward must score 95% or
more. We are delighted that Wynard,
Abbey and Yarty wards have all got
gold awards following observation of
staff activities, feedback from patients
and checking documentation.”
Three hospital wards
have achieved the
highest standard award
RD&E achieves UNICEF’s Baby
Friendly award
The Royal Devon & Exeter Centre
for Women’s Health has achieved
international recognition with the
prestigious UNICEF (United Nation’s
Children’s Fund) Baby Friendly award.
We decided to join forces with UNICEF
UK’s Baby Friendly initiative to increase
breastfeeding rates and to improve
care for mothers at all our maternity
units including the RD&E, Tiverton,
Okehampton and Honiton.
Breastfeeding protects babies
against a wide range of serious
illnesses including gastroenteritis and
respiratory infections in infancy, as well
as allergies and diabetes in childhood.
We also know that breastfeeding
reduces the mother’s risk of some
cancers. Many mothers give up
breastfeeding before they want to. This
award shows that we provide support
for women to establish breastfeeding
