Fate of Mercury in the Arctic 16 predominant anthropogenic mercury emissions at the regional and global levels and their anthropogenic dependence on emissions such as coal burning (Slemr et al., 1992 and references therein). In Denmark, the greatest net rate of atmospheric Hg accumulation is found in 1953, 184 µg m -2 yr -1 , comparable to that of Greenland with the flux going into sharp decline, with an accumulation rate for 1994 as 14 µg m -2 yr -1 . On the Faroe Islands, the maximum mercury concentration of 498 ng g -1 dw., is seen in the depth dated to be 1954 +/-2, with a 210 Pb dating model, in good agreement with the historical maximums in 1953 in S. Greenland and Denmark. Long-term accumulation rate of mercury in this core was 0.95 +/- 0.36 µg m -2 yr -1 for the period of 4200 B.C. to AD 833; n = 61, in agreement with what is known about the global mercury cycle, and what would be expected in a remote area. The Hg concentrations in the Faroe Islands are higher than those found in cores from other sites, but the net Hg accumulation rates are comparable. Mercury was also investigated in high arctic peat, requiring development of an improved corer for sampling (Paper 9, Noernberg et al., submitted). In addition to the above, in-progress, high Arctic studies, a study of Station Nord, NE Greenland was carried out for the Royal Danish Air Force. This is an engineering study conceived and carried out by this author studying a high Arctic station as a point source. It includes trace metals and mercury data from lake and marine sediments, as well as poly-aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) data. It is an internally reviewed NERI report to the Royal Danish Air Force, (Goodsite et al., 2003, not included in this PhD but available from NERI). The results for mercury in the marine and lake sediments are in good agreement with other published results, as discussed in the report.
Fate of Mercury in the Arctic 17 1.3 Sampling and Arctic fieldwork Much Ph.D. work was spent in the field. Safe and effective planning of fieldwork is discussed. A logical template meeting the reporting requirements for reporting Environmental Arctic fieldwork in Greenland, Canada and the US was developed. This template has since been accepted and utilized by research groups in Germany, Switzerland and Finland. Planning and executing fieldwork is discussed in Appendix B.
