OF PAGES: 2MONROECOUNTYSHERIFF’SOFFICECHAPTER: AdministrativeTOPIC:Contacts with Public, Media, and OtherAgencies_____________________Sheriff of <strong>Monroe</strong> <strong>County</strong>ALDF-7F-01PURPOSE:The purpose of this directive is to establishpolicy for the <strong>Monroe</strong> <strong>County</strong> Detention Facilitiesto maintain positive, informative relationshipswith the public, the media, and other agencieswith related functions, consistent with thesecurity and privacy interests of the <strong>Monroe</strong><strong>County</strong> Sheriff’s <strong>Office</strong>, its staff, and theoffenders confined in the jail facilities.SCOPE:This directive applies to all personnel.PERSON RESPONSIBLE:All Personnel.DEFINITIONS:Public - Individuals who are not officials in lawenforcement.News Media Representatives - Identifiedrepresentatives of newspapers, magazines,radio, and television stations.POLICY AND PROCEDURES:GuidelinesThe Bureau of Corrections will have a system forestablishing and maintaining appropriaterelationships with the public, news media, lawenforcement agencies, and other agencies whenthose individuals and organizations contribute tothe overall mission of the facility.The Major of the Bureau of Corrections will bethe authorized spokesperson for this level of theorganization, subject to guidance and directionfrom the Public Information Division.Media Relations FunctionsThe Major of the Bureau of Corrections willprovide verbal and written information to themedia to help portray a factual picture of thefacility.News media representatives will be permittedaccess to all public areas of the facility (i.e., theKey West facility’s lobby). Only authorized staffmay explain programs or announce importantfacts or events in the facility to the media.
