Social and environmental responsibility5.1 Have the supplier enterprises balanced their peat extraction by compensatoryconservation measures such as setting aside and preserving pristine mires5.2 Do the benefits of the supplier enterprises’ activities accrue to a large number ofpeople and not a privileged few. For example,- do the enterprises pay adequate wages,- do they give local employment,- do they adequately compensate those with rights over land,- do the enterprises sell their products at prices affordable by ordinary people5.3 Do the enterprises have acceptable policies on the after-use of degradedpeatlands ensuring that, when production has ceased, they restore the peatlandto a peat accumulating ecosystem (mire) or other environmentally appropriateuse.5.4 Do the enterprises promote knowledge and awareness of mires and peatlands5.5 Do the enterprises conduct research into, and/or use, alternative growing media
