A man used to climb up the tower fromtime to time, with a hammer in his hand. They auctioned the Armenian houses. Those who bought themripped out the stones to sell them to builders.” Necmi’s own father purchased a house that the familyused to rent during the summers in what was once an Armenian neighborhood.Necmi’s account, based on what was transmitted to him by his elders and his own experiences as achild, reveals a sensitivity to the complexity of Muslim-Christian relations in the day-to-day life of anordinary Turkish town. Unsurprisingly, his narrative is marked by a number of silences. For example, what might have gone unsaid in survivors’ accounts? In the accounts of local Muslims? Some of the internalcontradictions in the narrative suggest that as a native son who is also a keen observer of local affairs,Necmi himself may be of two minds about some key issues, as are many individuals of Muslim originin Turkey.43
