Summerville Fire and RescueThe Summerville Fire and RescueDepartment is a combinationpaid/volunteer department. Thedepartment consists of 90 career and 43volunteer fire suppression personnel, withmany of the firemen being trainedEmergency Medical Technicians (EMT’s).Suppression personnel are divided into 3battalions working 24 hour and 15 minuteshifts. The Fire and Rescue Department provides a range of emergency services including, but not limited to, firesuppression, fire investigation, vehicle and industrial extraction, hazardous materials incident response,disaster preparedness and response, emergency medical first responder service, and mutual aid to otherlocal fire and law enforcement agencies. In addition, the Department provides fire prevention educationand fire safety training to local businesses, industry, churches, schools, and civic organizations.Department personnel are also heavily involved in various student‐mentoring programs at the elementaryand high school levels.The Insurance Service Office (ISO) is an organization that inspects and successively rates the Nation’s firedepartments to help insurance companies determine premiums for homeowners and businesses in theareas that each individual department serves. Assessed fire departments are assigned a class rating basedon fire suppression ability, water availability and communications. Class 1 is given to exemplary firedepartments and Class 10 to fire departments that do not meet minimum criteria. Homeowners served byfire departments with higher‐class ratings must pay higher premiums to insure their properties. TheSummerville Fire Department maintains a Class 3 rating, placing the Summerville Fire Department in thetop 5 percentile of fire departments in the US, according to the ISO.Other Fire DepartmentsThe Old Fort Fire Department serves most areas outside of the Town limits within the Dorchester Countysection of the Planning Area. In addition, areas of the Planning Area that are within Charleston County areserved by the C&B Volunteer Fire Department. All area fire departments have mutual aid agreements thatallow for additional resources to be available to any department if a large scale fire or emergency eventtakes place in a given area.
