According to the National Park Service, while “cemeteries, birthplaces, graves <strong>of</strong> historical figures,properties owned by religious institutions or used for religious purposes, structures that have beenmoved from their original locations, reconstructed historic buildings, properties primarilycommemorative in nature, and properties that have achieved significance within the past 50 years shallnot be considered eligible for the NRHP, such properties will qualify if they are integral parts <strong>of</strong> districtsthat do meet the criteria or if they fall within the following categories: (spacing and numbering <strong>of</strong> thefollowing list is not consistent with the one on previous page, plus lettering is a different font than rest<strong>of</strong> text) A religious property deriving primary significance from architectural or artistic distinction orhistorical importance; or A building or structure removed from its original location but which is primarily significant forarchitectural value, or which is the surviving structure most importantly associated with ahistoric person or event; or A birthplace or grave <strong>of</strong> a historical figure <strong>of</strong> outstanding importance if there is no appropriatesite or building associated with his or her productive life; or A cemetery that derives its primary importance from graves <strong>of</strong> persons <strong>of</strong> transcendentimportance, from age, from distinctive design features, or from association with historic events;or A reconstructed building when accurately executed in a suitable environment and presented ina dignified manner as part <strong>of</strong> a restoration master plan, and when no other building or structurewith the same association has survived; or A property primarily commemorative in intent if design, age, tradition, or symbolic value hasinvested it with its own exceptional significance; or A property achieving significance within the past 50 years if it is <strong>of</strong> exceptional importance.”Source: National Register Criteria for Evaluation. National Park ServiceBased on these criteria, there are a number <strong>of</strong> additional properties within the <strong>Summerville</strong> <strong>Planning</strong><strong>Area</strong> that may be eligible for inclusion on the NRHP. These may be listed in the future as part <strong>of</strong> anexpansion <strong>of</strong> existing districts, or as stand‐alone historic sites. A partial listing <strong>of</strong> these sites is includedin Table CR2. Additionally, the <strong>Town</strong> and other local governments may look into identifying additionalareas as desired.Cultural Resources Element Page 3
