The <strong>Town</strong>’s Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for the maintenance <strong>of</strong> all parks andrecreation facilities owned by the <strong>Town</strong>, including eight baseball/s<strong>of</strong>tball fields, one football field, sixtennis courts, and two parks with playground equipment. The department’s staff maintains all vegetationalong the <strong>Town</strong>’s rights <strong>of</strong> way and plants trees and bushes in all <strong>Town</strong> parks. The department is housed ina 7,200 square foot facility that houses <strong>of</strong>fices, storage areas for all equipment owned by the department,and a small engine repair shop.The <strong>Town</strong>’s Maintenance Department is responsible for the repair and general maintenance <strong>of</strong> all townowned equipment and vehicles. The maintenance team ensures that all vehicles and equipment are keptin proper and safe operating condition. The department ensures compliance with all safety standards,promotes personal safety, and serves on 24‐hour call to eliminate downtime for emergency vehicles. Thestaff maintains approximately 130 vehicles and other types <strong>of</strong> equipment owned by the <strong>Town</strong>.The <strong>Summerville</strong> Stormwater and Drainage Department is responsible for the maintenance <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Town</strong>’sstormwater systems, ranging from small drainage ditches along area roadways to the 8‐mile long SawmillBranch Canal. The department is responsible for the installation <strong>of</strong> pipe and other drainageappurtenances.For areas <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Summerville</strong> <strong>Planning</strong> <strong>Area</strong> outside <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Town</strong> limits, services are provided by the PublicWorks Department in the county where the property is located. Services in each <strong>of</strong> the counties may differfrom what is provided by the <strong>Town</strong>.Community Facilities Element Page 11
