These elements are a source of greatbenefit to residents and visitors. For centuries, these elements have helped to attract people tothe community, beginning when residents ofCharleston would summer in Summerville inorder to avoid the high humidity and malarialconditions present along the region’s coastline. The stands of long‐leaf pine also provided for anaesthetically pleasing backdrop to life for theTown’s residents. Many of these pine trees havebeen preserved over the years by the Town’s firstin the nation Tree Ordinance; as evidenced by thepine in the Town’s seal and the Town Motto“Sacra Pinus Esto- The Pine is Sacred”.Above: The tree‐lined streets and walkways create scenicbeauty for residents of Summerville and visitors to the Town.In Summerville’s Old Town section, winding roadways lined with pine trees and larger‐lot homes help toremind residents and visitors of what Summerville’s original residents saw. In the downtown area,Hutchinson Square and Azalea Park provide a scenic backdrop and a pleasant place to sit, converse, andpeople watch. Finally, the western part of the Planning Area is located along the banks of the AshleyRiver, a State Scenic River that has served as a corridor for residents and goods moving betweensections of the Lowcountry region since pre‐historic times. A goal that Summerville has previouslyidentified for itself is to ensure that future generations of residents are able to gain access to the AshleyRiver for recreational needs, including boating and fishing. The Dorchester County Parks and RecreationMaster Plan identifies an Ashley River park site that if built would potentially include a canoe/kayaklaunch for boaters, as well as multiple fishing locations along the river side.Cultural Resources Element Page 5
