ConsumptionIn 2008, South Carolina residents and businesses consumed 545 trillion Btus <strong>of</strong> energy. In 2008, theaverage resident <strong>of</strong> South Carolina consumed a total <strong>of</strong> 369 million Btus over the course <strong>of</strong> the year. Thisplaced the state 19 th in the nation in terms <strong>of</strong> per‐capita energy consumption (see Figure EN4). Of this amount, 35 percent <strong>of</strong>the consumption was by the industrial sector, 27 percent was by the transportation sector, including bycommuters, 22 percent was by residences, and 15 percent was by commercial businesses, as shown inFigure EN5. In comparison to the US (Figure EN6), South Carolina’s industrial sector uses more energy inrelation to other user types than in the nation as a whole.Energy Element Page 5
