Emergency Medical ServicesResidents <strong>of</strong> most <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Summerville</strong> <strong>Planning</strong> <strong>Area</strong> are provided Emergency Medical Services byproviders in the county <strong>of</strong> their residence. Within the Dorchester County section <strong>of</strong> <strong>Summerville</strong>, there arethree EMS stations, whose locations are shown on the map on the previous page. These stations operateon a 24‐hour basis. Additionally, there is an ambulance service during the prime hours <strong>of</strong> the day(approximately 12 hours per day) to provide additional coverage when needed in <strong>Summerville</strong> and otherareas <strong>of</strong> the county. There are approximately 50 employees, providing ambulance services in DorchesterCounty. 47 <strong>of</strong> these employees are certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT’s) and paramedics, andfour employees provide billing and administrative services. Overall, the EMS averages over 14,000response calls per year. These calls are handled by the <strong>Town</strong>’s own dispatchersThe EMS not only provides paramedic service to residents, but also performs various community services.These services include speaking to local groups, emergency service training and CPR/First Aid training. TheEMT’s, along with the <strong>Summerville</strong> Fire Department, also participates in the “Vial for Life” program. Thisprogram allows senior citizens to place vital information medical information in a known location so thatEMT’s may find and utilize it during a medical emergency.While the majority <strong>of</strong> sites in the <strong>Planning</strong> <strong>Area</strong> are served by the Dorchester County EMS, BerkeleyCounty locations within the <strong>Summerville</strong> <strong>Planning</strong> <strong>Area</strong> are provided EMS service through Berkeley CountyEMS and Charleston County locations are served by Charleston County EMS.EMS Special Operations TeamThe Dorchester County EMS Special Operations Team became operational on March 13, 2010. The goal<strong>of</strong> the team is to support any extended operation <strong>of</strong> emergency and public service departments withinDorchester County. The Special Operations Team is comprised <strong>of</strong> (as <strong>of</strong> October 2010) 26 members fromDorchester County EMS with various levels <strong>of</strong> certifications within the National Registry <strong>of</strong> EmergencyMedical Technicians and South Carolina Fire Academy.Emergency PreparednessDorchester County’s Emergency Operations Center works in conjunction with both Berkeley andCharleston County’s EOC. In the event <strong>of</strong> an evacuation, the Dorchester County EOC would ensure thatnecessary information be disseminated to the media at the EOC location in each county. The shelterlocations for Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties are listed in Table CF3. Please note thatlocations marked with an asterisk are those that may also be open in case <strong>of</strong> a voluntary evacuation.Community Facilities Element Page 6
