SchoolsAs described in the Community Facilities Element, residents of the Summerville Planning Area are servedby schools in Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester Counties. The primary school district serving theSummerville Planning Area is the Dorchester County School District #2. There are also a number ofprivate schools located within the Summerville Planning Area.Educational and Civic InstitutionsAs mentioned in the Community Facilities andEconomic Development Elements, the role ofeducation is of great importance toSummerville. In addition to the public andprivate schools located in the Planning Area,numerous local museums and library facilities,including the Summerville Dorchester Museumand the Timrod Library, continue to educateresidents and visitors of the history of theSummerville area and its role in the history ofthe metro Charleston region and SouthCarolina.Above: The Summerville‐Dorchester Museum.Cultural EventsAbove: The Summerville Farmers Market held every Saturdaybetween April and November, is one of the many culturalevents that take place in the Planning Area throughout theyear.Numerous cultural events throughout the yearare held within the Summerville Planning Area.These events range from those that are typicalto communities of Summerville’s size,including a weekly Saturday morning FarmersMarket during the spring, summer, and earlyfall months, an annual Fourth of Julycelebration (Red, White, & Blue on the Green),and an annual Christmas parade, to eventsthat are unique to Summerville that drawregional and/or national interest. These eventsnot only provide a cultural benefit to residentsof the Summerville Planning Area, but also aneconomic benefit to local businesses.Two of the largest of the regional events are the Flowertown Festival and the Sculpture in the SouthAnnual Show and Sale. Since 1973, The Flowertown Festival has been held to coincide with thebeginning of spring in the Summerville area. Visitors come to the festival to view the azaleas anddogwoods that are blossoming in the town parks, to sample the entertainment and food offerings, andto view and purchase arts and crafts.Cultural Resources Element Page 7
Since 1999, Sculpture in the South provides visitors with the chance to interact and purchase sculpturesfrom leading sculptors from throughout the Southeastern US (more than 35 sculptors had exhibits in2010), and is held in mid May in and around Azalea Park. Proceeds from sculpture sales at the show areused for a Permanent Public Sculpture Program.
