Parks & RecreationPearson Park is a fine example <strong>of</strong> a community park with an assortment <strong>of</strong>fields, courts and pavilions.is highly desirable to includeneighborhood residents in the parkdesign process to ensure it iscompatible and accounts for thedesires <strong>of</strong> its intended users.Recommended facilities andimprovements include:• picnic tables with covers• bar‐be‐que pits• sidewalks/natural walking trail• shade trees and nativelandscaping• drinking fountain(s)• security lighting• multipurpose open play area• multipurpose play courts• playscape (up to 25 children)perimeter fencing/landscaping• benches• on‐ or <strong>of</strong>f‐street parkingCOMMUNITY PARKS are to provide active and passive recreation forcitizens generally within a distance <strong>of</strong> one mile. The facilities andimprovements must be planned and designed for heavy use by persons <strong>of</strong> allages. Where feasible, community parks should be located adjacent to agreenway to provide an <strong>of</strong>f‐street linear linkage from other areas <strong>of</strong> thecommunity. They must also be located such that their use characteristics, suchas overhead lighting, crowd noise and traffic, will not impact adjacentneighborhoods. Primary access to a community park should be provided byan arterial street with secondary access via a collector roadway. Communitywide input through a mail‐back survey, intercept surveys, or interest groupinterviews should be a primary determinant <strong>of</strong> the development program fora community park. Recommended facilities and improvements include:• picnic tables with coversbarbeque pits• sidewalks/natural walking trailmountain biking trails• exercise stations (optional)shade trees and native landscaping• drinking fountainssecurity lighting• multi‐purpose open play areasmultipurpose courts• playscape (up to 50 children)bicycle racks• perimeter fencing/landscapingʺchildren at playʺ street signs• benchestrash receptacles and enclosuresPage 4-16
