EXERCISE 6====================================================The following case studies will help students integrate aspects of nutritional care<strong>and</strong> support for <strong>HIV</strong>-infected pregnant <strong>and</strong> lactating women or adolescents in orderto provide appropriate interventions. The following activities support the role-play:• Field visits to antenatal clinics• Field visits to VCT clinics• Field visits to PMTCT clinics• Mother support groups• Open class discussion with a counselor or counselors working with pregnant orlactating <strong>HIV</strong>-infected women• Other activities appropriate for the topic areaTASK 1: Ask students to role-play the following case study illustrating nutritionalcare <strong>and</strong> support of an <strong>HIV</strong>-positive pregnant woman. One student should take therole of the pregnant women <strong>and</strong> another, the role of the nutritional counselor.Rachael is a 30-year-old school teacher in the second trimester of her pregnancywith her first child. During her antenatal visit, she tested positive for <strong>HIV</strong>. She liveswith her husb<strong>and</strong>, who has not been tested. She has not disclosed her status to himor anyone else. Her husb<strong>and</strong> was recently laid off work, <strong>and</strong> Rachael tells you thather income is just enough to cover their basic needs. She usually eats one main meala day <strong>and</strong> may have one to two snacks throughout the day. At present Rachael isasymptomatic.Students should discuss the following questions about counseling Rachael. Answersare provided.172
