Although this module focuses on the Ndola Demonstration<strong>Project</strong>, country-specific case studies can be developed to use in its place. For thismodule, names for the role-play were selected arbitrarily. Modify the names <strong>and</strong> anyother aspects (i.e. foods described) of the following case studies as appropriate forcountry <strong>and</strong> community contexts.Refer to slide 31: Counseling on Infant Feeding, slide 32: Informed Choice, H<strong>and</strong>out6.2 PMTCT Decision-Making Algorithm, <strong>and</strong> LINKAGES infant feeding guidelines.TASK 1: Case study for counseling pregnant <strong>and</strong> lactating women in areas of high <strong>HIV</strong>prevalence (including PMTCT)In the following exercise, students will have the opportunity to practice assessment<strong>and</strong> counseling skills for the care <strong>and</strong> support of pregnant <strong>and</strong> lactating women whoare either <strong>HIV</strong>-infected or of unknown status but live in areas of high <strong>HIV</strong>prevalence. Specifically, students will practice helping women make an informedchoice of infant feeding options <strong>and</strong> counsel them on PMTCT.Divide the students into pairs <strong>and</strong> give each pair one of the following case studies.One student plays the part of health worker or counselor, <strong>and</strong> the other studentplays the part of father or mother. The questions provided are intended forguidance. Students should be encouraged to formulate additional questions toenhance the counseling session. Once the session is complete, the entire class maydiscuss each case study from the points of view of the health worker <strong>and</strong> client.All case studies should be prefaced with the following information. One out of everyfive people in Zambia between the ages of 15 <strong>and</strong> 49 is infected with <strong>HIV</strong>, <strong>and</strong>approximately 25,000 Zambian infants will become infected with <strong>HIV</strong> each yeareither in utero, during labor <strong>and</strong> delivery, or through breastfeeding. Theseroprevalence rate of the three districts where counselors are working are 25.6percent in Kabwe, 41 percent in Livingston, <strong>and</strong> 28 percent in Ndola.210
