SESSION 8 NUTRITIONAL CARE FOR YOUNG CHILDREN INFECTED WITH<strong>HIV</strong> OR BORN TO <strong>HIV</strong>-INFECTED MOTHERSPurposeThe purpose of this session is to equip students with knowledge <strong>and</strong> materials onnutritional care <strong>and</strong> support for children infected with <strong>HIV</strong> or born to mothersinfected with <strong>HIV</strong> <strong>and</strong> the care of severely malnourished children with <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong>.Learning objectivesBy the end of the session students will be able to:• Explain the relationship between nutrition <strong>and</strong> <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong> in children <strong>and</strong> theetiology of growth failure among <strong>HIV</strong>-infected children <strong>and</strong> children born ofmothers infected with <strong>HIV</strong>.• List the nutrition actions to prevent or reduce wasting <strong>and</strong> specific nutritiondeficiencies.• Present the key issues in the management of severely malnourished childrenwith <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong>.Prerequisite knowledge• Technical background in infant <strong>and</strong> young child nutrition.• Session 2: The Link between <strong>Nutrition</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong>Estimated time: 120 minutes, excluding time for field work216
