SESSION 9 MANAGEMENT OF DRUG AND FOOD INTERACTIONS IN<strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong> THERAPYPurposeThe purpose of the session is to equip students with knowledge <strong>and</strong> skills for thenutritional management of drug <strong>and</strong> food interactions in <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong> therapy.Learning objectivesBy the end of the session, students will be able to:• State why nutritional management of drug <strong>and</strong> food interactions is important in<strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong> therapy.• List the common types of drugs taken by people living with <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong>, differenttypes of food-drug interactions, their nutritional implications, <strong>and</strong> theappropriate dietary responses.• Assess <strong>and</strong> analyze information collected during client assessment <strong>and</strong> workwith the <strong>HIV</strong>-infected person to select the most appropriate actions orapproach.Prerequisite knowledge• Technical background in infant, child, maternal, <strong>and</strong> adult nutrition <strong>and</strong><strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong>-related symptoms• Basic counseling skillsEstimated time: 120 minutes, excluding time for field work240
