• Eat small, frequent meals throughout the day• Minimize gastrointestinal discomfort• Maintain fluid intake• Avoid foods such as hot, spicy foods, sweet foods, alcohol, <strong>and</strong> caffeine thatcause thermal, chemical, <strong>and</strong> mechanical irritation• Treat infections immediately to avoid effects on appetite, ability to eat, <strong>and</strong>nutrient absorption <strong>and</strong> retention• Follow food safety <strong>and</strong> hygiene guidelinesDiet history in <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong> (slide 12)Diet histories of people living with <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong> are taken to assess the following:• Dietary intake levels, specifically the types <strong>and</strong> amounts of food eaten(including food access <strong>and</strong> utilization <strong>and</strong> food h<strong>and</strong>ling) <strong>and</strong> use ofsupplements <strong>and</strong> medications• Factors that affect food intake, such as food availability, appetite, eatingpatterns, medication side effects, traditional food taboos, lifestyles (smoking,alcohol, physical activity, caffeine intake, use of social drugs), psychologicalfactors (stress <strong>and</strong> depression), stigma, <strong>and</strong> economic factors<strong>Nutrition</strong>al care <strong>and</strong> support interventions (slide 13)<strong>Nutrition</strong>al care <strong>and</strong> support interventions <strong>and</strong> strategies should be based on thenutritional assessment. However, the stage of <strong>HIV</strong> infection can affect theeffectiveness of nutrition interventions.46
