6th International Congress of DipterologyDengue fever and insecticides resistance in Aedes aegypti inTaiwanHsu, E.-L.(1), Y.-H. Lee, P.-L. Lee, Y.-H. Lin & H.-J. Teng (2)(1) Insect Physiology and Toxicology Laboratory, Department of Entomology, NationalTaiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan, ROC.(2) Center for Disease Control, Division of Quarantine and Disease Protection,Deapartment of Health. Taipei, Taiwan , ROC.Taiwan has been island-wide epidemics of dengue fever, 80% ofpopulation was infected during 1942-1945. There was no case reporteduntil 1980 resulted from the anti-malaria campaign by the massive DDT &-HCH sprays. In 1982 there was an outbreak of dengue fever in Liuchiuvillage 80% of inhabitants were infected. There was no case reported(may not be recognized in clinics) in 1982-1985. The dengue fever statedepidemics since 1986. The strengthen control programs were put on byHealth Department and Environmental Protection Administration. Denguefever was control under acceptable situations since then. The insecticideshave been routinely applied for Aedes aegypti control by pest controloperators when dengue fever cases occurred in the Tainan and Kaohsiungareas of Taiwan. But it was failed to control in 2002 the insecticideresistance and control strategy were re-examined. The poor efficiency ofthe insecticides application and under estimated the mosquito populationdensity result the control failure in 2002. The resistance ratios of adultmosquito of the Chianjen, Lingya (2002), and Lingya (1900R) strains forpermethrin compared to susceptible strains were above 312.5X, whilethose of the 4 th instar larvae were 20.8, 30.5 and 102.1, respectively. Results of synergism study on larvae resistance to permethrin showedcorrelations to the activities of microsomal monooxygenases and esterases. The effect alternative insecticides should be prepared for the mosquitoemergence control.Key Words: dengue fever, Aedes aegypti, insecticide resistance, esterases, microsomal monooxygenases114
