6th International Congress of DipterologyGeneric limits within the Microphorella Becker group(Diptera: Dolichopodidae s.lat.; Parathalassiinae)Cumming, J.M. (1) & S.E. Brooks (2)(1 & 2) Invertebrate Biodiversity, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, C.E.F., Ottawa, ON,K1A 0C6, CANADA, cummingjm@agr.gc.caMicrophorella Becker is a little known genus of small grey parathalassiineflies that has recently been classified in an expanded concept of the familyDolichopodidae. The genus currently includes 16 described species andseveral undescribed species that generally inhabit marine or fresh-watershoreline habitats in all zoogeographic regions of the world except theAfrotropical Region. Various authors have speculated about whether thesespecies, as well as a few additional Microphorella-like shoreline speciesassigned to separate genera, represent one or several distinct genericlineages. Described and undescribed species of Microphorella are analysedphylogenetically and compared with other parathalasiine genera todetermine generic limits within the Microphorella group.Key Words: Empidoidea, Dolichopodidae s.lat., Parathalassiinae,Microphorella, phylogeny∗∗∗∗∗∗∗∗∗∗52
