The genus currently includes 16 described species andseveral undescribed species that generally inhabit marine or fresh-watershoreline habitats in all zoogeographic regions of the world except theAfrotropical Region. Various authors have speculated about whether thesespecies, as well as a few additional Microphorella-like shoreline speciesassigned to separate genera, represent one or several distinct genericlineages.
