Nine New World genera (comprising about65 described and 35 undescribed species) are presently recognized:Andrenosoma, Cerotainiops, Dasyllis, Neophoneus, Pilica, Pogonosoma,plus three undescribed genera related to Dasyllis. The number of species described so far is ca. 150world-wide. Despite the fact that numerous earlier authors have beenworking on the group there are currently but a few taxonomic specialistspublishing on this group. On the other hand, several research groups areworking on the behavioural aspects and genetics of Diopsidae and in manycases the species identity of the live populations used for experiments, is indoubt. This results in information accumulation without reliable speciesreference. Therefore, a more accurate taxonomic knowledge at specieslevel is required. We have studied types of Diasemopsis aethiopica and itsclosest relatives as well as identified material deposited in Tervuren(RMCA) and London (BMNH). Five morphologically different entities(probably species) were incorporated in the RMCA collection under D.aethiopica, some of them clearly distinguishable on the basis of externalcharacters. Earlier authors did not use genital characters, their descriptionsare superficial, and their drawings are restricted to general parts (mostly“habitus”) but do not show many taxonomically important details. Basedon our studies with D. aethiopica and related species there are severalsynonyms. These types have to be studied in order to establish stablespecies identities. Similar research on other genera would be desirable inthe future which can be supported by behavioural, allometric and geneticdata from the live populations. The stocks in laboratories also provide longseries of specimens which may solve problems when using scatteredmaterial deposited in dry collections.75
