6th International Congress of DipterologySome peculiar species of Anthomyiidae in JapanSuwa, M.Laboratory of Systematic Entomology, Graduate School of Agriculture, HokkaidoUniversity, Sapporo, 060-8589 Japan.E-mail: suwa@res.agr.hokudai.ac.jpIn Japan 222 species of Anthomyiidae have been recorded. Most of themare widely distributed in the Palaearctic or the Holarctic region, or havetheir allies in the region. Some are, however, very different from thenorthern elements and have a lot of allies in southern China or theHimalayan ranges, being exemplified by Pegomya chinensis Hennig, 1973,Pegomya nigra Suwa, 1974, Phorbia asymmetrica Suwa, 1974, etc. Someothers have a few allies disjunctly distributed outside Japan, beingexemplified by Chirosia asymmetrica Suwa, 2006, Hydrophoria japonicaSuwa, 2002, Hyporites shakshain Suwa, 1974, and so on. The members ofthe former group are understood to be descendants of lineages originated inmountainous ranges of southern Asia from the ancestors with northernorigin. On the other hand, the members of the latter group might beinterpreted as relics descended from the ancestors distributed in northernranges. The anthomyiid fauna of Japan basically composed of northernPalaearctic elements is enriched with southern elements and relics.Key Words: Anthomyiidae, Japan, fauna, peculiar species, origin∗∗∗∗∗∗∗∗∗∗252
