Wise Faculty of Life Sciences, Tel AvivUniversity, Tel Aviv 69978, IsraelThe extremely diverse superfamily Tephritoidea currently contains thefollowing families: Ctenostylidae, Lonchaeidae, Pallopteridae, Piophilidae,Platystomatidae, Pyrgotidae, Richardiidae, Tephritidae and Ulidiidae.Recent progress in the systematics and biology of the group is reported inresponse to various previously stated 'needs' and the global ‘biodiversitycrisis’. The uniqueness of the superfamily derives from its impact onmankind, size, distinctive biological traits and aesthetic appeal. Thedifferential attributes of the component families are elaborated. Inparticular, an overview on the higher classification, important revisions,monographs, catalogs, keys, phylogenies, and host lists, as well as otherinformation, such as on immature stages, biology and ecology, are given.Dissemination of taxonomic and biological expertise, especially via theinternet and by the production of computerized interactive keys, ishighlighted. The status of two very different families is compared. For themain family, the Tephritidae, a detailed higher classification now existsthat is largely based on a fairly rigorous cladistic analysis. There is also aglossary of tephritid terminology, which should be used and expanded forthe rest of the Tephritoidea, and indeed for the entire Diptera. At the otherend of the range is the Piophilidae, a small family of about 70 knownspecies, the biology of several of which has been studied in considerabledetail. A cladistic analysis, albeit intuitive, was recently published withinthe framework of a quite comprehensive revision of the family.76
6th International Congress of DipterologyRecommendations for the future include: Scientific cooperation amongscientists, including periodical meetings; training of junior staff andeducating the new generation of tephritoid taxonomists; and creatingspecial funds for the study of tephritoid taxonomy. A special effort shouldbe made to discover the still missing taxa and to improve the quality ofpreservation procedures.
