6th International Congress of DipterologyAdults are characterised by their elbowed and thickened arista and by theirbroad frons, for which reason the species were placed in the genus Goniain the time of Meigen and Zetterstedt. However, these similarities to notindicate a common descent but are rather the result of convergence – as isso often the case in Tachinidae. The systematic position of Germaria is notclear at present. It has been thought to be related to the most diverse genera, but recent authors are in agreement that it belongs to the subfamilyTachininae. This presentation will discuss different hypotheses concerningthe sister-group of the genus Germaria in the light of the characters of theimmature stages, biology and historical biogeography.Key Words: Tachinidae, Germaria, biogeography, taxonomy, phylogeny,larvae∗∗∗∗∗∗∗∗∗∗330
