Takagi (2)(1) Graduate School of Bioresource and Bioenvironmental Sciences, Kyushu University,Fukuoka 812-8581, Japan.(2) Institute of Biological Control, Faculty of Agriculture, Kyushu University, Fukuoka812-8581, JapanThe effect of seven constant temperatures of 15, 17.5, 20, 22.5, 25, 27.5and 30 o C on development of the stone leek leafminer, Liriomyza chinensis(Kato) (Diptera: Agromyzidae), on Japanese bunching onion, Alliumfistulosum L., was studied in the laboratory. Total developmental timesfrom egg to adult emergence decreased from 69.6 to 17.1 days fortemperatures from 15 to 30 o C, with pupae requiring more time fordevelopment than the combined egg and larva stages. Both linear andnonlinear (Logan equation VI) models provided a reliable fit ofdevelopment rates versus temperature for all immature stages. The lowerdevelopmental thresholds that were estimated from linear regressionequations for the egg, first, second and third instars, total larva, egg-larval,pupa, and total combined immature stages were 12.1, 10.6, 13.6, 8, 9.6,11.3, 11.2 and 11.4 o C, respectively. The degree-day accumulation wascalculated as 312.5 for development from egg to adult emergence. Byfitting the nonlinear models to the data the upper temperatures for egg,larva, pupa and total immature stages were calculated as 39.9, 38.5, 36.7and 37 o C, and optimal temperatures for egg, larva, pupa and total immaturestages were 33.7, 30.3, 30.8 and 31 o C, respectively. These data are usefulfor predicting population dynamics of L. chinensis under field conditionsand determining the maximum proportion of susceptible individuals forfacilitating improved timing of application of control measures.Key Words: Liriomyza chinensis, temperature, development, threshold,degree-day274

Ourcurrent molecular study aims to confirm, test and further resolve thehigher-level classification within the Bombyliidae. We sequenced 28Sribosomal DNA and the entire nuclear gene CAD for more than 80 taxa,representing all of the major subfamilies.
