I have made fruit fly surveys in Sri Lanka from 1993 to1999 and have conducted taxonomic study based on the collected material.Drew et al. described B. invadens in 2005. As B. dorsalis has beenrecorded from Sri Lanka in previous catalogues (Delfinado & Hardy, 1977;Norrbom et al., 2000), it is neccessary to revise B. dorsalis species groupin Sri Lanka. Therefore I examined 11 species collected from Sri Lankaincluding B. invadens, B. kandiensis and B. paraverbascifoliae which aremethyl eugenol responding species and B. dorsalis mainly collected fromTaiwan. The results of morphological, ecological, and biological studiesshow that the taxon recorded as B. dorsalis in Sri Lanka is referred to B.invadens. 6th International Congress of DipterologyMorphological diversity of male genitalia in Bactroceradorsalis species group (Diptera: Tephritidae)Tsuruta, K.Entomological Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Kyushu University, Fukuoka, 812-8581 JAPAN (Moji Plant Protection Station, Kitakyushu, 801-0841 JAPAN)Bactrocera dorsalis species group contains significant plant quarantinepests and is most frequently intercepted at airport inspection in Japan.Identification of species in this group is very difficult when based only ongeneral external morphological characters. Primary purpose of this study isto find new characters for identification of this group. In my taxonomicstudy of Dacini in Sri Lanka, I examined male genitalia of 34 species asfollows: Bactrocera (Afrodacus), B.(Bactrocera), B.(Hemigymnodacus), B.(Javadacus), B.(Paratridacus), B. (Parazeugodacus), B. (Zeugodacus), andDacus (Callantra), and D. (Didacus). I found the shapes of acrophallusand epandrium and lateral surstyli are useful for identification for somerelated species in B. dorsalis species group, such as B. kandiensis and B.fernandoi, while those of B. caryeae, B. invadens, B. kandiensis, and B.paraverbascifoliae are very similar to each other and difficult todistinguish. Further investigation based on 37 Asian and 14 Australianspecies revealed that the structure of acrophallus is invariable in B. dorsalisspecies group, while the shapes of acrophallus and epandrium and lateralsurstyli are variable as shown in most of the Sri Lankan species. Thesignificance of shapes of acrophallus and epandrium and lateral surstyli astaxonomic characters is discussed.Key Words: Bactrocera dorsalis species group, male genitalia,morphology, Asia, Australia∗∗∗∗∗∗∗∗∗∗277
