Degree Information/The Degree of Master of Urban Planning 167Exceptions will be permitted only in unusual cases and when petitioned by the student’sadvisory committee and approved by the Office of <strong>Graduate</strong> and ProfessionalStudies.Continuous RegistrationA student in the thesis option of the Master of Urban Planning program who hascompleted all coursework on his/her degree plan other than 691 (Research) is required tobe in continuous registration until all requirements for the degree have been completed.Non-thesis option students are not required to be registered once they have completed allof the degree plan coursework. See Continuous Registration Requirements, page 208.Foreign LanguagesA foreign language is not required for the Master of Urban Planning degree.Non-Thesis OptionA thesis is not required. A final comprehensive examination is required for the nonthesisMaster of Urban Planning program and no exemptions are allowed. The requirementsas to level of courses and examinations are the same as for the thesis option Masterof Urban Planning degree.The final exam cannot be held prior to the mid point of the semester if questions onthe exam are based on courses in which the student is currently enrolled.InternshipA student who undertakes a professional internship in partial fulfillment of master’sdegree requirements after completing all course requirements for the master’s degreemust return to the campus for the final examination. The final examination isnot to be administered until all other requirements for the degree, including anyinternship, have been substantially completed.Thesis OptionAn acceptable thesis is required for the Master of Urban Planning degree for a studentwho selects the thesis option program. The finished work must reflect a comprehensiveunderstanding of the pertinent literature and express in clear English, the problem(s) forstudy, the method, significance and results of the student’s original research. Guidelinesfor the preparation of the thesis are available in the Thesis Manual, which is available onlineat thesis.tamu.edu.After successful defense (or exemption) and approval by the student’s advisory committeeand the head of the student’s major department, the student must submit his/herthesis to the Thesis Office in electronic format as a single <strong>PDF</strong> file. The <strong>PDF</strong> file mustbe uploaded to the Thesis Office website thesis.tamu.edu. Additionally, a signed approvalform must be brought or mailed to the Thesis Office. Both the <strong>PDF</strong> file and the signedapproval form are required by the deadline.Deadline dates for submitting are announced each semester or summer term in theOffice of <strong>Graduate</strong> and Professional Studies Calendar (see Time Limit statement). Thesedates also can be accessed via the website thesis.tamu.edu.Before a student can be “cleared” by the Thesis Office, a processing fee must be paidat the Fiscal Department. After commencement, theses are digitally stored and madeavailable through the Texas A&M Libraries.
