180 Degree Information/The Degree of Doctor of PhilosophyStudents who are employed full-time while completing their degree may fulfill totalresidence requirements by completion of less-than-full time course loads each semester.In order to be considered for this, the student is required to submit a Petition for Waiversand Exceptions along with verification of his/her employment to the Office of <strong>Graduate</strong>and Professional Studies. An employee should submit verification of his/her employmentat the time he/she submits the degree plan. See Registration, page 34.Time LimitAll requirements for doctoral degrees (except for Mays Business School) mustbe completed within a period of ten consecutive calendar years for the degree tobe granted. For Mays Business School time limit, see the following section. Acourse will be considered valid until 10 years after the end of the semester in which it istaken. <strong>Graduate</strong> credit for coursework more than ten calendar years old at the time of thefinal oral examination may not be used to satisfy degree requirements.After passing the required preliminary oral and written examinations for a doctoraldegree, the student must complete the final examination within four calendar years. Otherwise,the student will be required to repeat the preliminary examination.A final corrected version of the dissertation or record of study in electronic formatas a single <strong>PDF</strong> file must be cleared by the Thesis Office no later than one year after thefinal examination or within the 10-year time limit, whichever occurs first. Failure to doso will result in the degree not being awarded.The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy—Mays Business SchoolWork leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Mays BusinessSchool is designed to give a candidate thorough and comprehensive knowledge of hisor her professional field and training in methods of research. Mays exceptions to theUniversity requirements include: a) all requirements for the doctoral degree must becompleted within a period of five consecutive calendar years for the degree to be granted;b) a course will be considered valid until five years after the end of the semester in whichit is taken and credit for coursework more than five calendar years old at the time of thefinal oral examination may not be used to satisfy degree requirements; and c) a final correctedversion of the dissertation or record of study in electronic format as a single <strong>PDF</strong>file must be cleared by the Thesis Office no later than one year after the final examinationor within the five year time limit, whichever occurs first. Failure to do so will result inthe degree not being awarded.Guidelines for the preparation of the dissertation are available in the Thesis Manual,which is available online at thesis.tamu.edu. After successful defense and approval by thestudent’s advisory committee and the head of the student’s major department (or Chairof the Intercollegiate Faculty, if appropriate), a student must submit his/her dissertationto the Thesis Office in electronic format as a single <strong>PDF</strong> file. The <strong>PDF</strong> file must be uploadedto the Thesis Office website at thesis.tamu.edu. Additionally, a signed approvalform must be brought or mailed to the Thesis Office.
