Degree Information/The Degree of Doctor of Engineering 195proseminar before taking the qualifying examination. Continuation in the program and/or any additional required study is dependent on the results of this qualifying examination.The chair of the student’s advisory committee will report in writing to the Office ofGraduate and Professional Studies the results of the qualifying examination. A positivevote by all members of the graduate committee with at most one dissension is requiredto pass a student on his or her exam. A department may have a stricter requirement providedthere is consistency within all degree programs within a department.In addition, each candidate must successfully complete an oral and written preliminaryexamination prior to admission to candidacy and a final oral examination uponcompletion of the record of study. Both of these examinations will conform to the requirementsfor the PhD preliminary examination and final examination.Except as noted in the sections above, the requirements for the Doctor of Educationdegree are identical to those for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.Application for DegreeGraduate degrees are conferred at the close of each regular semester and 10-weeksummer semester. A candidate for an advanced degree who expects to complete his/herwork at the end of a given semester must apply for graduation by submitting the electronicapplication for degree to the Office of the Registrar and by paying the requiredgraduation fee to the Fiscal Department no later than the Friday of the second week ofthe fall or spring semester or the Friday of the first week of the first summer term. Theelectronic application for degree can be accessed via the student’s Howdy portal.A cancellation made after the application deadline will not receive a refund of thediploma fee. Students who have completed all their degree requirements will notbe allowed to cancel their graduation. The Registrar attempts each semester to balancethe size of each ceremony. Thus, the make-up of the ceremony by colleges does changefrom semester to semester. Graduation times are posted each semester on the website ofthe Office of the Registrar. A student should check the website at graduation.tamu.edu todetermine the date and time of the graduation ceremony.The Degree of Doctor of EngineeringThe Doctor of Engineering (DEng) program has as its objective the education of menand women to function at the highest levels of the engineering profession, with emphasison solving problems which arise in the use of technology to benefit society at large. Sincethese problems frequently have a societal impact which is non-technical in nature andsince technological advances are implemented through business and industry, the Doctorof Engineering program seeks to couple understanding of the characteristics of socialand business institutions with high competence in solving engineering problems.The curriculum is a 96 semester credit hour professional program beyond the baccalaureatedegree. A minimum of 64 credit hours beyond the master’s degree is required.These totals include a maximum of 16 credit hours for a professional internship.Following entry into the Doctor of Engineering program, the student will completea minimal 36-semester-credit-hour course of study prior to a one calendar year (4 credithours per semester) internship in which the student will extend his or her education in apractice-oriented environment such as an industrial organization. The Doctor of Engineeringprogram is administered by the Dwight Look College of Engineering with theOffice of Graduate and Professional Studies.
