Octave FuzzWhat was that? If it sounded like a phantom guitar or basspossessed by The Ghost of Great Guitarists Past, then itprobably was a Tycobrahe Octavia. The Octavia is an example of a fuzz+octave effect. Onepioneering user of this type of effect was Jimi Hendrix. The Tycobrahe Octavia in particular was used by JeffBeck, and continues to be an essential part of MichaelLandau’s tone making tool kit.Stomp, Mod & Delay/Verb Models • Stomp ModelsThe Octavia uses an audio output transformer and two germanium diodes to rectify (afancy word for whack) the bass signal, thus creating the high octave type sound. For ourmodel, we studied the sweet-sounding original pictured here. We knew we had a keeperwhen every guitarist and bassist in the building wanted to take it home for a little oftheir own after hours “research.”6 • 7Bronze MasterThe Maestro Bass Brassmaster is considered by many to be the Holy Grail of bassdistortion units, and ultra-rare bird designed in the early ‘70’s for Maestro by synthgenius Tom Oberheim. It showed up on Chris Squire’s gear list in a mid-70’s Yes tourprogram. In fact, the Brassmaster was the first distortion unit we can think of designedprimarily with the bassist in mind, and man, did Mr. Oberheim get it right! Theoriginal has a fairly elaborate set of controls, include two separate volumes and togglesfor accentuating different harmonic voicings. We weren’t able to make an exactduplicate of some of that complexity when creating the Bronze Master for your BassPODXT Live, but you’ll find that this model does give you a luscious palette of supersweetbass fuzz in the style of the BrassMaster, with righteous distortion that doesn’ttake away that all-important low end.* All product names are trademarks of their respective owners, which are in no way associated oraffiliated with Line 6.
