As touted in a Maestroadvertisement, the Echoplex’s “...special effects range all theway from a controlled high speed reverberation to a full,throbbing echo”! The main feature of the Echoplex design isa special cartridge of looped 1/4-inch audio tape that wrapspast separate record and playback heads. The position of theplayback head can be moved to adjust the delay time from 60to 650 milliseconds. Bass PODXT Live’s EP-1 modelemulates the classic Echoplex tone with the extra advantageof up to 2 seconds of delay time. Because of it’s tube-baseddesign, this effect is a great choice for bass tones that could use a little extra “fur.” Plus,there’s lots of room in more modern music for bass that’s, well, shall we say, a bit morethan just “bass.” On page 2, you’ll find FLUT (wow and flutter) and DRIVE controlsso that you can not only dial up some tube warmth like the original, but add thatunique sound of a slipping, dirty capstan as well.6 • 23Multi-HeadLong before Boss ® pedals, the RE-101 SpaceEcho was Roland ® ’s first venture into the worldof effects processing. Instead of having onemovable playback head (like the Echoplex) thismachine has multiple stationary heads. Youchange delay times by switching amongst theseheads, and then fine-tune delay time with amotor speed control. The groovy part is that you can play back on multiple heads at thesame time to get multi-tap delay effects.
