idge across the afterlife 167Some still consider the Mother to have been a discipleof Sri Aurobindo. It is therefore important to state thatsuch was not the case. Sri Aurobindo had his amanuensis,Nirodbaran, write to Arindam Basu: “The Mother is not adisciple of Sri Aurobindo. She has had the same realizationand experience as myself.” And he wrote in a letter: “Whatis known as Sri Aurobindo’s Yoga is the joint creation of SriAurobindo and the Mother.” 14 The equivalence of Sri Aurobindoand the Mother is evident when considering thefollowing basic declarations. Sri Aurobindo: “The Mother’sconsciousness and mine are the same, the one Divine Consciousnessin two, because that is necessary for the play.”The Mother: “Without him I exist not, without me he isnot manifest.” These pronouncements reflect the truth ofthe Divine essence and its manifestation. “There is no differencebetween the Mother’s path and mine,” wrote SriAurobindo, “we have and have always had the same path,the path that leads to the supramental change and the divinerealization; not only at the end, but from the beginningthey have been the same.” 15The Mother herself narrates, in Words of Long Ago,how in 1912 she had noted down “the whole program ofwhat Sri Aurobindo has done and the method of doing thework on Earth. ... I met Sri Aurobindo for the first time in1914, two years later, and I had already made the wholeprogram.” That program reads as follows: “The generalaim to be attained is the advent of a progressive universalharmony. The means for attaining this aim, in regardto the Earth, is the realization of human unity through theawakening in all and the manifestation by all of the innerDivinity, which is One.
