adam kadmon and the evolution 23Addendum on the Cosmic Purusha“In a famous hymn of the Rig-Veda (X.90), the ultimatecreative singularity is envisioned as a macranthropos orgiant man, called purusha. This primordial superbeing isdescribed as having ‘a thousand heads, a thousand eyes, athousand feet’. The purusha pervades the world and transcendsit by ‘ten fingers’. Only one quarter of the macranthroposcan be found in the realm of creation, while threequarters are said to be immortal in the heavenly domain.“Through the purusha’s self-sacrifice the world wascreated. His mind is said to have been given to the Moon;his eyes to the Sun; his breath to the air element; his navelto the midspace; his head to the sky; his feet to the earth;and so on. Even the structure of ancient India’s society wasthought to have been preordained by his self-sacrifice,since the purusha’s mouth gave rise to the brahmin estate;his arms to the warrior estate; his thighs to the people atlarge; and his feet to the servile estate.“The symbolic representation of the universe in theshape of the Cosmic Man found expression in a distinctiveapproach to architecture, sculpture, and literature. Thepurpose of all human creation was not only to preserve theunity of the macranthropos but also to recapitulate the purusha’soriginal creative sacrifice that produced the cosmositself. More than that, all human activity – whether sacredor secular (which is really a modern distinction) – was tobe modelled on the Cosmic Man.
