She was stooping with a hand onher <strong>for</strong>ehead, and did not notice me as I entered.”The second photographer, on <strong>the</strong> contrary, recalls:“When I entered Sri Aurobindo’s abode through <strong>the</strong> door at<strong>the</strong> top of <strong>the</strong> staircase leading from <strong>the</strong> Meditation Hall, Iinstantly became petrified by <strong>the</strong> sight of <strong>the</strong> Mo<strong>the</strong>r sittingon a chair in <strong>the</strong> central room – <strong>the</strong> room in which her paintingsadorn <strong>the</strong> walls and <strong>the</strong> tiger skins decorate <strong>the</strong> divan.She was seated between <strong>the</strong> two doors on <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn sideof <strong>the</strong> narrow room with her eyes shut, lost in deep meditation.I have never seen her like that again. I stood be<strong>for</strong>e her <strong>for</strong> some time.”The Mind of LightOn <strong>the</strong> last day be<strong>for</strong>e Sri Aurobindo left his body <strong>the</strong>Mo<strong>the</strong>r said: “Each time I enter <strong>the</strong> room, I see him pullingdown <strong>the</strong> Supramental Light.” And later: “All <strong>the</strong> supramental<strong>for</strong>ce he had accumulated in his body, he passed onto me and I received it.” 15In his memoir A Call from Pondicherry, Dr. Prabhat Sanyalwrote: “She stood <strong>the</strong>re, near <strong>the</strong> feet of Sri Aurobindo,her hair had been undressed and was flowing about hershoulders.” 16 Once again, to know what really happenedin those climactic hours, we have to turn to <strong>the</strong> Mo<strong>the</strong>r herself.“He had accumulated in his body much supramentalForce, and as soon as he left ...
