10Theodicy: “Naturedoes not Make Mistakes”The term “<strong>the</strong>odicy” comes from <strong>the</strong> Greek “<strong>the</strong>os,”which means god, and “dikè,” which means justice.“Theodicy” could <strong>the</strong>re<strong>for</strong>e be defined as “<strong>the</strong> justificationof divine providence in view of <strong>the</strong> existence of evil andsuffering in <strong>the</strong> world.” According to <strong>the</strong> Merriam-WebsterOnline Dictionary <strong>the</strong> meaning is “defense of God’s goodnessand omnipotence in view of <strong>the</strong> existence of evil.” Thedefinition in <strong>the</strong> Encyclopaedia Britannica is “explanation ofwhy a perfectly good, almighty and all-knowing God permitsevil.” Both definitions omit suffering.
