So for instance the followingwords of the Mother spoken to Dr. Sanyal on thevery morning of Sri Aurobindo’s passing: “About a yearago, while I was discussing things, I remarked that I feltlike leaving this body of mine. Sri Aurobindo spoke out ina very firm tone: ‘No, this can never be. If necessary for thistransformation, I might go. You will have to fulfil our Yogaof supramental descent and transformation.’ ... After that –this took place early in 1950 – he gradually let himself fallill. For he knew quite well that, should he say ‘I must go’,I would not have obeyed him and I would have gone. Foraccording to the way I felt, he was much more indispensablethan I. She also said later: “I told him that,as to me, it would be absolutely without regret and withoutdifficulty that I would leave my body to go and joinhim ... And he answered: ‘Your body is indispensable forthe Work. Without your body the Work cannot be done.’This is something that was said in 1949, which means a littlemore than a year before he left.” 7Then there is the amazing avowal of the Mother thatshe does not seem to have known that Sri Aurobindo, step6 Prabhat Sanyal: A Call from Pondicherry, in Mother India, December1991.7 Kireet Joshi: Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, p. 103.
