preparing for the miraculous 63The evocation of this episode, of the extended Yogicbattle on the verge of life and death of which so much dependedfor humanity, including ourselves, may lead to reflectionsof the following kind. Firstly, the surroundings ofthe Mother, visible and invisible, were rather different fromwhat most people who were present at the time knew orprefer to remember. She, who took everything into herself,had apparently to swallow more poison than nectar. Eachtime her life was in danger, she would point out an attack ofblack magic as the cause. The Asura, using human persons,was at his tricks maybe more than ever, as the avataric Yogaapproached the stage where the first supramental bodywas in the process of formation. Secondly, this phase of theYoga, being the attempt at transformation for which Sri Aurobindohad ordered the Mother to remain in her body, ishardly ever remembered or commented upon, as if it wereof little or no importance. Thirdly, all great spiritual innovationshave been diminished, disfigured, reduced to a lowerlevel and torn to sectarian shreds by human lack of understandingand blind or ambitious ego. Fourthly, the endof the Mother’s transformational Yoga, if at that time herheart had failed, would not have meant the failure of thesupramental transformation, assured since 1956; it wouldhowever have meant a cancellation of possibilities whichcould only be worked out by the Mother, and consequentlya postponement of the transformative process for an indeterminatetime. Lastly, rare are the souls able to discernthe Asuric forces at work, for they are more subtle that theignorant humans, have powers which humans deem to bedivine, and do deeds the consequences of which humanscannot estimate.The Overman ConsciousnessIn the first hours of the very first day of 1969, the Motherhad another special experience. “In the night it came slowly,
