Theuraemic symptoms increased, for the moment of the greatmaster act of the Avatar had come. After all the work SriAurobindo and the Mother had done, after all the burdensand the suffering, the black passages and the dawns oflight, something had to be done which is unknown of inthe history of humankind. As the Mother would say later:“For the Will of the Supreme to be expressed as it were incontradiction with the totality of the laws of the Manifestation,that happens just at the last moment – at the ultimatelimit of possibility.” 11The descent into deathSri Aurobindo’s “death” was interpreted by most asthe natural result of illness and/or advanced age.In 1924 Sri Aurobindo had said that there were threecauses that [then] could still bring about his death: 1. violentsurprise or accident; 2. the action of old age; 3. his ownchoice, when finding it not possible to accomplish his [avataric]endeavour this time, i.e. establishing the supramentalConsciousness on Earth, or if something would provehim that it was impossible.
