sri aurobindo’s descent into death 177yet been experienced. And the Epilogue, the happy endingwhich in this case will be a life of fulfilment on Earth, liessomewhere in the future. Thus reached Savitri, in the wordsof Nirodbaran, its “incomplete completion.”The “worse than worst” situation did not subside. Theuraemic symptoms increased, for the moment of the greatmaster act of the Avatar had come. After all the work SriAurobindo and the Mother had done, after all the burdensand the suffering, the black passages and the dawns oflight, something had to be done which is unknown of inthe history of humankind. What happened in 1950, however, was a fourth possibility not foreseeable in 1924: thathe would have to descend into death voluntarily, havingin the meantime acquired the powers to do so, in order tomake that his endeavour would not end in failure.Who realized in December 1950 – and even now –that at that time, in that place on Earth, a mystery without11 Mother’s Agenda 1961, p. 289.
