Chapter 1Aquaculture Successes in Asia:Contributing to Sustained Developmentand Poverty AlleviationSena S. De Silva and F. Brian DavyAbstract Aquaculture, though considered to have over a 2500 year history, wasmostly practiced as an art. It began to be transformed into a modern science in thesecond half of the 20th century. Within a period of 25 years or more, it had begun toimpress upon as a major food production sector, having recorded an annual averagegrowth rate of nearly 8% in the last two decades, as often purported to be the fastestgrowing primary production sector. Currently, aquaculture accounts for 50% of theglobal food fish consumption.The sector has been and continues to be predominant in developing countries,particularly in Asia, which accounts for more than 85% of the global production.Asian aquaculture by and large is a small scale farming activity, where most practicesare family-owned, managed, and operated. The sector has provided direct andindirect livelihood means to millions, a significant proportion of which is rural, andfor some Asian nations, it is a main source of foreign exchange earnings. Furthermore,it has contributed to food security and poverty alleviation, and is considered to bea successful primary food sector globally.1.1 IntroductionFish/aquatic food organisms have been inextricably linked with human life overmillennia. Indeed, it is even suggested that the prime impacting factor on the evolutionof the human brain, which has made us what we are today, is linked to our earlyancestors depending on aquatic food sources as the main form of nourishment thatprovided ample quantities of n-3 and n-6 series highly unsaturated fatty acids.Homo sapiens in the recent history went through agricultural and industrial revolutions,which gradually impacted on our life modalities including food sources.S.S.
